Saint Croix Island Ranger Station
Address: 84 Saint Croix Drive, Calais, ME 04619
Tiny Saint Croix Island in the river between Maine and New Brunswick was the site of France's first attempt at a year-round colony north of Florida: in 1604, Pierre Dugua and Samuel de Champlain's expedition wintered here, and nearly half of the 79 men died of scurvy and cold. The island, long used by the Passamaquoddy people, is viewable from a mainland interpretive trail with bronze statues of the settlers.
Walk the mainland interpretive trail and peer across at the island through the viewing scopes. For a challenge, kayak the river for a closer look at the island from the water.
