The Saugus Iron Works, running from 1646 to about 1670, was the first successful integrated ironworks in North America, where waterwheels powered a blast furnace, forge, and trip hammers on the Saugus River; the reconstructed works show the full process.
Watch the giant waterwheels turn and see the working trip hammer demonstrations; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, take the in-depth industrial tour and walk the nature trail along the river that powered it all.
