Two stretches of the Missouri River along the Nebraska-South Dakota border, totaling 98 miles, remain free-flowing much as Lewis and Clark found them in 1804, with sandbars, backwaters, and bluffs sheltering threatened piping plovers, least terns, and pallid sturgeon.

Canoe a gentle reach, fish for catfish, and bird along the sandbars. For a challenge, paddle a multi-day trip down the 59-mile eastern reach, camping on sandbars like the Corps of Discovery did.
