In January 1862, Union forces won the Battle of Mill Springs in the rain and mud of southern Kentucky, an early Union victory that cracked the Confederate defensive line in the West and cost the South General Felix Zollicoffer. The battlefield overlooks the Cumberland River near Nancy, Kentucky.
Explore the visitor center museum and drive the battlefield's marked stops. For a challenge, walk the trails at Zollicoffer Park, where the Confederate line broke, for a ground-level read of the fight.
