Hovenweep Visitor Center
Address: Hovenweep National Monument Visitor Center, Montezuma Creek, UT 84534
Hovenweep, a Paiute word for 'deserted valley,' protects six groups of remarkably crafted Ancestral Puebloan towers and villages perched on canyon rims, built around 1200 AD by masons whose square, oval, and D-shaped towers still stand after 800 years.
Walk the Square Tower loop past the rim-top ruins; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike out to the outlying tower groups like Holly and Horseshoe across the open sage plain.
