Calumet Visitor Center
Address: 98 5th St., Calumet, MI 49913
Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is where people first mined copper in North America, starting 7,000 years ago, and where 19th-century industrial mines made fortunes and drew immigrants from around the world. The park's Calumet and Quincy units and nearly two dozen heritage sites preserve shaft houses, the giant Quincy steam hoist, and entire mining towns.
Ride the tram into a real mine at Quincy and explore the Calumet unit's museums; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, go deeper, literally, on the underground tours of the Quincy or Adventure mines.
