Address: 170 Mile Creek Road, Grand Portage, MN 55605

Grand Portage was the great crossroads of the North American fur trade: Ojibwe people had used the 8.5-mile portage around the Pigeon River rapids for centuries, and the North West Company built its bustling inland headquarters here, where thousands of voyageurs gathered each summer. The reconstructed 1780s depot stands on Ojibwe land.

Explore the great hall and warehouses and meet costumed interpreters; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, hike the historic 8.5-mile Grand Portage trail itself toward Fort Charlotte.
