Address: 13551 Fort Washington Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744
Fort Washington stood for decades as the only fort guarding the nation's capital. The first fort was blown up by its own garrison as the British advanced in 1814, and the stone fort standing today was completed in 1824 and modernized over the following century without ever firing a shot in anger.
Explore the ramparts, bastions, and dark casemates overlooking the Potomac. For a challenge, walk the full grounds and river trails of one of the best-preserved third-system forts on the East Coast.
