Frederick Douglass NHS Visitor Center
Address: 1411 W Street, S.E., Washington, DC 20020
Cedar Hill, on its hilltop in Washington's Anacostia, was the last home of Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery to become America's greatest abolitionist orator, writer, and statesman; he lived here from 1877 until his death in 1895, writing and entertaining presidents.
Tour the house where he wrote his final autobiography and see the tiny 'Growlery' cabin where he worked. For a challenge, take the full ranger tour and study the view Douglass loved across the capital he helped change.
