Fort Pulaski Visitor Center
Address: 101 Fort Pulaski Road, Savannah, GA 31410
Fort Pulaski, the great brick fort on Cockspur Island near Savannah, fell in just 30 hours in April 1862 when new Union rifled cannon smashed walls once thought impregnable, a bombardment that made masonry forts obsolete overnight. The young engineer Robert E. Lee had worked on its foundations decades earlier.
Explore the ramparts, tunnels, and moat, and watch cannon demonstrations; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, bike or hike the island trails and kayak the surrounding tidal creeks.
