Address: Fort Frederica National Monument, 6515 Frederica Rd., St. Simons Island, GA 31522

Fort Frederica, founded by James Oglethorpe in 1736 on St. Simons Island, anchored the British colony of Georgia against Spanish Florida; Oglethorpe's 1742 victory at Bloody Marsh ended Spain's threat to the colony forever. Archaeology has uncovered the fort and the buried colonial town of Frederica beneath the grass.

Walk the town's excavated foundations, play the site's archaeology games, and visit the Bloody Marsh battle site; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, study the remarkably complete colonial street plan and the full battle site on foot.
