Address: 1750 Rim Rock Drive, Fruita, CO 81521

Colorado National Monument is a landscape of sheer-walled canyons cut into red sandstone high above Grand Junction, topped by pinyon-juniper plateau with views across the Colorado Plateau. John Otto, the monument's first custodian, was paid a dollar a month and built many of its earliest trails himself.

Ride the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive, peer into Monument Canyon, and walk the rim trails; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, ride the full Rim Rock Drive climb by road bike or hike the steep trail up to Liberty Cap.
