Address: 81 CARL SANDBURG LANE, FLAT ROCK, NC 28731

Connemara, a white farmhouse in the North Carolina mountains, was the last home of Carl Sandburg, the poet of Chicago and Lincoln's great biographer, who wrote here for 22 years while his wife Lilian raised her famous champion dairy goats; the house remains exactly as the family left it.

Meet the descendant goat herd in the barn and tour the poet's house; young kids love the goats best. For a challenge, hike the five miles of trails to the top of Glassy Mountain where Sandburg found his quiet.
