Visitor Center at the Big Hole National Battlefield

Address: 16425 Highway 43 West, Wisdom, MT 59761

Big Hole preserves the site where, on August 9-10, 1877, Nez Perce families fought a desperate delaying action against the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry during their flight toward Canada. It was the largest battle of the Nez Perce War, with heavy losses on both sides, including many Nez Perce women and children. The battlefield is managed as part of Nez Perce National Historical Park.

Visit the visitor center and walk the short battlefield trails. For a challenge, hike the full trail network up to the siege-area overlook for a somber view of the whole field.
