Vicksburg was the Gibraltar of the Confederacy until Ulysses S. Grant's 47-day siege starved it into surrender on July 4, 1863, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River. The park preserves the siege lines and over 1,300 monuments, the raised Union ironclad USS Cairo, and a national cemetery.
Drive the 16-mile tour road, climb through the USS Cairo, and visit the national cemetery; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, bike the hilly tour road or walk the battlefield trails from the Union approaches to the Confederate works.
