Poverty Point World Heritage Site

Address: 6859 Highway 577, Pioneer, LA 71266

Poverty Point is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by a hunter-fisher-gatherer culture between about 1700 and 1100 BCE: a huge complex of concentric earthen ridges and mounds, including the 72-foot Mound A, raised one basket of soil at a time. Its people traded for stone and minerals from hundreds of miles away.

Ride the tram tour, walk the ancient plaza, and try atlatl demonstrations; young kids love throwing with the atlatl. For a challenge, hike the full trail around the ridges and mounds, one of the most impressive prehistoric landscapes in North America.
