The Battle of Stones River, fought over New Year's 1862-63 in the cedar thickets and cotton fields of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was one of the war's bloodiest by percentage and a vital Union win after a year of defeats; Lincoln credited it with saving the cause. The Hazen Brigade Monument here is the oldest intact Civil War monument in the nation.

Walk the Slaughter Pen trail and see the Hazen Brigade Monument; young kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge. For a challenge, walk or bike the full battlefield trail and tour the national cemetery.
