Address: 282 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02903

This green oasis in downtown Providence marks where Roger Williams, banished from Massachusetts for his beliefs, founded Providence in 1636 on the radical principles of religious freedom and separation of church and state, ideas that later shaped the First Amendment.

Play on the common land that has been public since Williams's day and visit the exhibits in the 1736 Antram-Gray House. For a challenge, walk from the memorial through Providence's colonial Mile of History on Benefit Street.
