This 352-foot granite column on South Bass Island in Lake Erie honors Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's 1813 naval victory over the British fleet, 'We have met the enemy and they are ours,' and the century of peace that followed between the U.S., Britain, and Canada; the slain officers of both fleets rest beneath its rotunda.

Ride the elevator to the observation deck for views across the lake battleground and visit the visitor center. For a challenge, ferry to the island and study the battle's geography from the deck, matching the view to the fleets' maneuvers.
