The Noatak River basin, just north of the Arctic Circle, is thought to be America's last complete, unaltered river system, flowing 400 roadless miles from the Brooks Range to Kotzebue Sound past the 65-mile-long Grand Canyon of the Noatak. Caribou herds more than 200,000 strong still migrate through.
There are no roads, campgrounds, or services; most visitors flightsee or boat in from Bettles or Kotzebue. For a challenge, hardened paddlers can float the entire Noatak on a multi-week wilderness expedition.
