Manzanar Visitor Center
Address: 5001 Highway 395, Independence, CA 93526
Manzanar preserves one of ten camps where the United States incarcerated more than 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. At its peak over 10,000 people lived here in the Owens Valley, beneath the Sierra Nevada, behind barbed wire. The visitor center occupies the camp's restored auditorium, and reconstructed barracks, a mess hall, and the cemetery monument stand along a driving tour.
Walk through a reconstructed barracks, try the visitor center's hands-on exhibits, and drive the tour road past the cemetery monument. For a challenge, walk the full 3.2-mile tour road on foot, reading the waysides block by block.
