Visitor Center
Address: 600 N 2nd St, Richmond, VA 23219
Maggie Lena Walker, born to a formerly enslaved mother, became the first American woman to charter and lead a bank, founding the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond's Jackson Ward in 1903, and she championed Black economic independence and civil rights her whole life. Her home on 'Quality Row' is restored to the 1930s.
Tour the house on a ranger program and see the visitor center film. For a challenge, pair the tour with a walking exploration of Jackson Ward, once called the Harlem of the South.
