Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America, home to John Smith and Pocahontas, and the site of the first representative assembly and the arrival of the first Africans in English America, both in 1619. The long-lost James Fort was rediscovered by archaeologists in the 1990s, and digging continues.
Watch archaeologists at work and see their finds in the Archaearium museum. For a challenge, walk or bike the full island loop and take the in-depth archaeology walking tour.
